CSS Coin |Case Study

The Challenge

Switzerland's largest health insurer came to us wanting to deepen customer engagement through a loyalty rewards program. On the surface, that sounds straightforward. In practice, it's a problem most loyalty programs solve badly.Traditional loyalty points are opaque. Customers don't know how they're valued, why they expire, or whether the company can quietly change the rules. That opacity erodes the exact trust a loyalty program is supposed to build. The insurer wanted something fundamentally different: a digital currency customers could genuinely trust, hold, and spend - not just accumulate and eventually forget about.

The Solution

We built CSS Coin as a complete digital payments infrastructure - not just a token, but the entire system required to make that token usable in the real world. That meant three things had to be built simultaneously and work flawlessly together: a token issuance system on blockchain, a mobile wallet customers could actually use day to day, and a merchant point-of-sale integration that worked at checkout without friction or failure. The point-of-sale layer was the hardest part - and the part most tokenization projects underestimate. A token is only valuable if someone can actually spend it. Building POS infrastructure means zero tolerance for downtime: every merchant terminal has to process transactions reliably, every time, because a failure at checkout isn't an abstract technical problem - it's a customer standing at a register unable to pay.We designed the system to handle that reliability requirement from day one, building merchant integrations that could scale across hundreds of locations without requiring custom work for each one.

The Result

We delivered the complete system - wallet, merchant integration, and token infrastructure - live in six weeks.
CSS Coin is now active across 1,400+ Swiss merchants, with more than 14 million coins issued and spent through the system - real currency, moving through a real merchant network, fully backed by Switzerland's largest health insurer.
What began as a loyalty mechanism became something more significant: proof that programmable money works at genuine consumer scale, with real transaction volume.
